FAQs
Pricing varies by material, louver size, and window dimensions. Composite and poly shutters cost less per window than real basswood. We provide a detailed written quote during your free in-home consultation with no obligation and no deposit required just for the estimate.
Quality plantation shutters last 20 to 30 years or longer with normal use. Unlike fabric shades that fade and blinds that break, shutters are a permanent fixture in your home. Norman Shutters are built with reinforced stiles, precision hinges, and UV-resistant finishes designed for long-term performance.
Yes. Real estate agents consistently list plantation shutters among the top window treatments that add resale value. Unlike blinds or curtains that buyers often replace, shutters stay with the home and are viewed as a permanent upgrade similar to crown molding or built-in shelving.
Louver size affects both look and view-through. 2.5-inch louvers give a traditional look for smaller windows. 3.5-inch louvers are the most popular size for standard windows. 4.5-inch louvers offer a modern, open look with the best outward view when tilted open. We bring all three sizes to your consultation.
Yes. We measure and build shutters for arches, half-circles, octagons, raked angles, and bay windows. Each specialty panel is custom-fabricated to match your window's exact geometry. This is one of the biggest advantages of shutters over blinds or shades for non-standard windows.
Composite and poly shutters are excellent for bathrooms. They resist moisture, steam, and humidity without warping or peeling. We do not recommend real basswood shutters for bathrooms due to the moisture exposure on Long Island, where coastal humidity adds extra stress.
A typical home with five to eight windows takes one day to install. Larger whole-house projects may take two days. Each window takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on the frame build-out and number of panels.
Yes. We build and install shutter panels specifically designed for French doors, with cutouts for door handles. The shutters mount to the door itself and swing with it, so there is no interference when opening or closing.
Basswood is real wood with the lightest weight and richest grain. Composite has an engineered wood core with a moisture-resistant outer layer. Poly is solid polymer that handles the most abuse from moisture, heat, and UV. We help you match the right material to each room during your consultation.
Shutters provide excellent light control but are not 100% blackout due to the small gaps between louvers and the frame. For a near-blackout result, we can add blackout roller shades behind the shutters. This combination gives you the architectural look of shutters with full room-darkening when you need it.
